Wizcon in the UK - a potted history
The DOS version of Wizcon was primarily sold in the UK, at the end of the 1980s, by Eurotherm Ltd under the name ESP (Eurotherm Supervisory Package). The original owners and developers of the software was a company called PCSoft, who worked closely with Eurotherm to develop comms drivers and some of the distinctive features. Eurotherms international presence made them ideal distributors.
Wizcon for DOS or ESP was a remarkably good seller and was noted for its ease of configuration, low PC spec requirement and reliability.
Rival players, like Wonderware, moved to a Windows 3.1 platform quickly and for a time Wizcon remained apparently stuck on DOS. This was not popular with some Wizcon users even though there was little benefit in terms of performance of going to Windows at that point.
Wizcon was the first major SCADA package to appear on a multi-tasking platform - OS2. This was technically way ahead of the rivals, but the IBM platform polarised the industrial user community. Those that wanted to stick with MicroSoft refused to use the OS2 solution. This greatly reduced Wizcons market.
By the time Wizcon 5 for Windows came out, industry in the UK was using several rival packages. Wizcon became the first to include Web features with their SCADA and to bundle a soft PLC and DCS package in with the SCADA. Wizcon has always been innovative as a product.
Due to re-branding, new ownership and restructuring, Wizcon has been marketed by;
PCSoft eMation Axeda Elutions (the current incarnation)
The major problem in recent years has been a lack of sales or support presence in the UK. When the Eurozone came into being, Axeda closed the UK office (a significant presence based in Northampton). Ever since the poorly attended UK market has struggled to meet potential despite a steadily evolving and innovative product.
